Fenerbahce return to the Champions League with a 3-2 aggregate win over Lyon

Fenerbahce beat Lyon 2-1 in the second leg of their Champions League playoff. The result gave the Turkish club a 3-2 aggregate victory.

The first match in Istanbul ended 1-1. Fenerbahce therefore needed a win in France, and two first-half goals put the visitors in control.

Two quick goals put Fenerbahce in control before half-time

Vedat Muriqi and Archie Brown scored close together during the first half. Their goals gave Fenerbahce a 2-0 lead in the match and a 3-1 advantage across the two legs. The visitors did not need to chase the game after that point. They could protect the centre, choose safer passes and make Lyon work for every opening.

Brown’s goal was especially important because it gave Fenerbahce room for one mistake. Lyon now needed two goals just to force extra time.

Malick Fofana gave Lyon hope after the break

Lyon increased the pressure in the second half and Malick Fofana reduced the score to 2-1. That goal changed the mood inside the stadium but did not change which team was advancing. The French side still needed another goal to level the aggregate score. Fenerbahce stayed compact and prevented that final equaliser.

The result carries sporting and financial value. Fenerbahce will now play eight league-phase matches against eight different clubs.

Lyon continue in the Europa League

Lyon did not leave European competition after the defeat. The French club moved into the Europa League league phase under UEFA’s qualification rules. Fenerbahce joined the 36-team Champions League field. Four matches will be at home and four will be away.

The playoff is complete. Fenerbahce can now prepare for the confirmed league-phase opponents instead of another qualifying round.
