Real Madrid present Jose Mourinho as head coach

Real Madrid formally presented Jose Mourinho as their head coach on 18 August. The private ceremony took place at the club’s training complex in Valdebebas. Mourinho had already started pre-season work after joining the team on 13 July.

The club first announced his appointment on 11 June. His contract runs for three seasons and ends on 30 June 2029. The presentation therefore confirmed an existing appointment rather than a new change made on 18 August.

The contract covers the next three seasons

Real Madrid‘s board approved Mourinho’s return before the summer preparation period. The agreement runs until the end of June 2029. He began work when the first-team pre-season programme opened on 13 July. The formal presentation came more than one month after that first training date. Real Madrid used a private club event and did not hold a public press conference. President Florentino Perez welcomed Mourinho during the ceremony.

The club presented several traditional items connected to the appointment. These included a shirt carrying Mourinho’s name and a model of the Santiago Bernabeu. Honorary president Jose Martinez Pirri also attended the event. Those details mark the public completion of the appointment process. They do not alter the contract announced in June. Mourinho remains tied to Real Madrid through three full seasons under the current agreement.

Mourinho has already directed pre-season matches

Mourinho did not wait for the presentation before starting football work. He led training and assessed the available squad during July and August. Real Madrid also completed friendly matches under his direction.

After an early friendly, Mourinho described three physical phases inside the team’s performance. He saw strong football from fresh players, followed by tired periods later. That review helped shape the remaining preparation work.

Several young players received minutes because senior options were still returning gradually. Mourinho used those matches to examine partnerships and fitness. Friendly results formed part of preparation, not the final measure of the season. The coach also spoke about the responsibility attached to every Real Madrid match. He expects competitive behaviour even during preparation. Official league and European games provide the stronger record of his second period.

This is Mourinho’s second period in Madrid

Mourinho first coached Real Madrid from 2010 until 2013. His team won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. The 2011/12 league title included a record points total at that time. He later worked in England, Italy and Turkey. His later clubs included Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma and Fenerbahce. Those jobs added different squads and competition formats to his coaching record.

Returning to the same club brings familiar expectations but a different group of players. The current squad did not experience his first Madrid period as one unit. The staff and football structure have also changed since 2013. Mourinho therefore starts with knowledge of the institution, not a copy of his old team. Training choices will reflect the current players and schedule. Past trophies provide context but do not decide new results.

The delayed league match changed the opening schedule

Real Madrid were originally due to begin the league season against Real Sociedad. That game was moved to 26 August because several players needed their required rest.

Their summer schedule had extended through international competition. The change gave Mourinho additional training days before the first league fixture. It also delayed the first official view of his starting lineup. Friendly selections cannot confirm the exact team for competitive matches.

Recovery remains important for players who returned later than others. The staff has to combine tactical preparation with individual physical programmes. A uniform workload would not reflect their different summer schedules. The revised date gives Real Madrid a clear first domestic target. Mourinho now prepares the group for 26 August rather than the original weekend. The club has confirmed that calendar change separately from his presentation.

Official matches will define the second period

The presentation completed the public ceremony around Mourinho’s return. His work had already begun, and the contract had already been signed. The next important information will come from competitive selections and results. Real Madrid expect to compete for domestic and European trophies every season. Mourinho’s three-year agreement gives the club a defined period for that work. It does not reduce the immediate pressure attached to each result.
