Tommy Marques leaves Barcelona and signs a permanent deal with Braga

Tommy Marques has left Barcelona for Braga after spending eleven years in the Catalan club’s system. The agreement gives the young midfielder a new route to senior football while allowing Barcelona to follow his progress.

Barcelona included a buyback option and a percentage of any later transfer. Those terms mean the clubs completed a permanent move without fully closing the possibility of a future return.

An eleven-year academy spell has ended

Marques joined La Masia in 2015 from Europa at under-nine level. He moved through the age groups and learned the technical demands that Barcelona places on central midfield players. His only period away came during a short loan at Damm in the 2023-24 season. He then returned and continued with the under-19 side and Barcelona Atletic.

The long academy record gives him a clear base in possession. Braga will now test how well those habits work in senior matches where opponents apply more physical pressure and offer less time on the ball.

Two first-team appearances showed the final academy step

Marques made his competitive Barcelona debut against Mallorca on 7 February. He later appeared against Alaves, completing two senior matches before the transfer. Those minutes were important, but they did not guarantee regular selection. Barcelona’s first-team midfield contains established players and other young graduates competing for the same places.

Moving can be a practical choice when first-team opportunities are limited. Braga can offer a separate development plan and a chance to earn a senior role through training and competitive appearances.

Braga receive a midfielder trained for possession

Marques is comfortable receiving the ball from defenders and turning toward the next line. He can also move into a deeper position when the team needs help to begin an attack. Portuguese football will ask him to act quickly after possession changes.

Braga often face teams that defend deep, but European and domestic matches can also create open transitions.

The midfielder must therefore add defensive timing to his passing quality. Closing the correct route and winning a second ball can be as important as starting an attack.

The transfer terms protect the plans of both clubs

The buyback clause gives Barcelona a defined option if Marques becomes ready for a return. The sell-on percentage also gives the club a financial interest if Braga later transfers him elsewhere. For Braga, the agreement brings a young player with a long education at a major academy. The Portuguese club can give him minutes and shape his role without treating the move as a short loan.

The next measure will be playing time, not the reputation of his former club. Marques now has to earn a place in a new squad and turn two first-team appearances into a longer senior record.

Braga can offer Marques more first-team opportunities

Marques had already trained around Barcelona’s first team and made two senior appearances, but regular minutes were difficult to guarantee. Braga can offer a more direct route from development football into a competitive first-team squad.

That opportunity was central to the permanent move. The midfielder will still need to earn his place. Portuguese football asks young players to read pressure quickly and protect the ball in tight central areas. His years at Barcelona should help with those demands because he is comfortable receiving a pass with opponents close behind him.

The first months will focus on adaptation

Marques must learn Braga’s pressing rules and the movement expected from its central midfielders. Regular training with the senior squad will show how quickly he can use his passing range in a more physical league. The club can then choose between immediate minutes and a gradual introduction.
